Umrah for women: travelling without a mahram, what the rules say and practical points
In short
Yes: a woman can perform Umrah without a mahram today. The official FAQ of the Saudi ministry in charge of Umrah answers "Yes, it is allowed", following an easing in March 2022 and a ministerial announcement in October 2022. For the visa, a woman meets the same conditions as any traveller: nationality or residence. The often-quoted "under 45 needs a mahram" rule appears in no current official source, and no minimum age of 18 for travelling alone is officially confirmed.

The rule today: Umrah without a mahram is permitted
Women preparing their Umrah, whether alone, with a friend or with their mother, often ask this first. The administrative answer is clear: the Saudi ministry in charge of Umrah allows it. Its frequently asked questions page, consulted on 23 October 2026, answers in one short sentence.
That answer adds no further condition. The same page does, however, contain other answers written during the Covid period. We come back to them below, because they explain some of the conflicting information still in circulation.
From 2022 to today: what changed
The rule did not change overnight. It was eased in two stages, which is why articles from early 2022 still describe conditions that no longer apply.
| Period | What was announced | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| March 2022 | Women aged 18 to 65 can perform Umrah without a mahram, within a group and vaccinated (at least one dose) | Gulf News, 26 March 2022 (secondary source) |
| October 2022 | The Saudi minister in charge of Umrah announces that a mahram is no longer required for women coming to Saudi Arabia | Arab News, article of 11 October 2022 (secondary source) |
| Today | The official FAQ answers "Yes, it is allowed" | Saudi ministry in charge of Umrah, consulted 24 October 2026 (official source) |
The October 2022 announcement was made by the minister, Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, at a press conference at the Saudi embassy in Cairo. According to Arab News, he said the measure applies to women coming to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
The conditions of March 2022 (group, age range, at least one vaccine dose) belong to that context. They do not appear in today's official answer.
Two myths worth setting aside
The first: a woman under 45 would need a mahram. The rule is often quoted, but we have not found it in any current official source, and it does not reflect today's official position.
The second: a woman would need to be at least 18 to perform Umrah without a mahram. This threshold is often presented as a current rule, but we have not found it in any official source in force. It echoes the group age range reported in 2022.
The religious question is for scholars
This guide describes the Saudi administrative rule: what the authorities require to enter the country and perform Umrah. The religious question is the subject of different opinions across the schools, and it is for scholars to answer it.
For information, the Arab News article on the 2022 announcement mentions the views of the Maliki and Shafi'i schools, which refer to travelling in the company of trustworthy women or safe company. We take no position: each traveller follows the person she consults.
The visa: the same conditions as any traveller
For the tourist eVisa, which allows Umrah outside the seasonal closure period, a woman applies on the same terms as a man. What matters is her nationality or where she lives.
- Nationality: if it is on the eVisa list, the application is straightforward. Our eligibility checker gives the answer for each country.
- Residence: Gulf residents, permanent residents of the United States, the United Kingdom or the European Union, and holders of a US, UK or Schengen visa already used can obtain the eVisa, as can their first-degree relatives. Details in our guide eVisa by residence.
- Passport: valid for at least 6 months.
- The visa is sent by email once approved, valid for one year with multiple entries, for stays limited to 90 days: check the wording printed on your visa.
For nationalities without access to the eVisa, the route is the Umrah visa via Nusuk, explained in our guide eVisa or Nusuk.
Practical points before you leave
These points apply to anyone travelling, and carry more weight when you go without a relative.
Choose how you travel
Alone, with a friend, with family or with an organised group: the decision is yours. The current administrative rule does not impose one.
Check your vaccines
The Saudi Ministry of Health requires the meningitis vaccine of everyone coming for Umrah, received at least 10 days before arrival, with a certificate showing the vaccine's name and date. Depending on your country of departure or situation, other vaccines apply: polio, yellow fever, and Covid during pregnancy or over 65. Your doctor will tell you which ones concern you.
Book your permit in Nusuk
Once you have the visa, the Umrah permit is booked in the Nusuk app for a given date and time. Only one permit is active at a time. See our guide booking your Umrah permit.
Keep copies of your documents
Passport, visa, vaccination certificate and bookings: keep one copy on paper and one on your phone, separate from the originals.
Share your itinerary
Give a relative your dates, hotels and flight numbers, and tell them how to reach you while you are away.
What myumrahvisa does for you
We apply for the tourist eVisa on behalf of individuals: you submit up to 4 passports per order, for example for yourself, your mother and your sister. A member of our team reviews each file, we enter the application on the official portal and we send you the visas.
We also accept travellers who are eligible through their residence, on presentation of the document that proves it. If no route applies, we say so clearly and nothing is charged.
Frequently asked questions
Can a woman do Umrah alone?
Yes. To the question of Umrah without a mahram, the official FAQ of the Saudi ministry in charge of Umrah answers "Yes, it is allowed". Travelling alone, with relatives or with a group is your choice.
Does the "under 45 needs a mahram" rule apply?
Nothing suggests it does. The rule is often quoted, but we have not found it in any current official source: since the ministerial announcement of October 2022, a mahram is no longer required, and the current official FAQ sets no age condition for Umrah without a mahram.
Do I need to be 18 to perform Umrah without a mahram?
No current official source confirms this minimum age. An age range of 18 to 65 was reported in 2022 among the group conditions of the time. Check the situation of a young traveller when you apply.
Does a woman have to travel with an organised group?
It is no longer an announced condition. Registering with a group was among the conditions announced in March 2022; the October 2022 announcement lifted the mahram requirement without restating it.
Is the visa different for a woman?
No. A woman applies for the tourist eVisa on the same terms as any traveller: a nationality on the list, or a residence that makes her eligible for the eVisa. Our free checker shows which route is possible.
